The story of Navratri

Navratri is one of the most significant festival of the Hindu celebrated all across the world. This year the nine day festival would be observed from 15 october to 24 october. The word Navratri is obtained by combining two Hindi words ‘Nav’ and ‘Ratri’ which means nine days.

The legend associate with navratri speaks about the great battle that took place between the powerful demon Mahishasura and Goddess Durga. Mahishasura was blessed with immortality by Lord Brahma, under one condition that mahishasura could be defeated only by a woman.

So Mahishasura attacked the trilak, heaven, and hell. Since, only a woman can defeat him, even the gods didn’t stand a chance against him. The worried gods prayed to Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, top help them to defeat their worst enemy. Looking at helpless gods, Lord Vishnu took the decision to create a woman to defeat Mahishasura. Now Lord Shiva who is also know as the god of destruction, it is the most powerful god, he helped to Lord Bramha. Then Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma put all their power together in the woman Lord Vishnu had created to demolish Mahishasura. It is believed that goddess Durga is a reincarnation, of goodness Parvati, who is the wife of Lord Shiva. Godess parvati – is the goddess of power that runs through the universe. So, on each day of Navratri different avatar of devi worshipped.
