A Test of Thinking Power, Focus and Patience

Pune: New English Medium School, in collaboration with Ramanbaug Mitra Mandal and Ahilyadevi Parents’ Association, successfully organised an Inter-School Chess Tournament on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, at the N.E.M.S. School Hall. The tournament was conducted in a vibrant and competitive atmosphere, with the aim of developing concentration, decision-making skills and sportsmanship among students.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by State-level Kho-Kho players Hon. Shri Rohan Bandivadekar and Hon. Shri Manish Kondhalkar as the Chief Guests.
The tournament witnessed enthusiastic participation from various schools, with a total of 202 students competing in the tournament.
During the matches, Hon. Shri Khemraj Ranpise, Chairman, Sports Committee, Deccan Education Society, visited the venue and interacted with the participants. He encouraged the young players and shared valuable guidance, boosting their confidence and morale.
The prize distribution ceremony was held in the presence of Shivchhatrapati Awardee Chess Player and Coach Hon. Shri Jayant Gokhale, along with Hon. Shri Mithilesh Jadhav and Hon. Shri Omkar Shinde as Guests of Honour. The winners were felicitated by the dignitaries.
The awards included trophies for the 1st and 2nd place winners, medals for the 3rd place winners, and participation certificates for all participants.
The tournament provided students with an opportunity to develop their interest in chess while strengthening their focus, logical thinking, strategic planning, decision-making abilities and competitive spirit. The matches were conducted with great enthusiasm, discipline and sportsmanship, making the tournament a successful and enriching experience for all participants.
The programme received valuable guidance and support from Hon. Shri Amit Kulkarni, Chairman, School Committee, N.E.M.S., and Mrs. Hemangi Deshmukh, HM, Primary Section.
The entire tournament was meticulously planned and coordinated by Shri Pramod Ukirde and Shri Devidas Wakale, Physical Education Teachers of the school.
The successful completion of the tournament marked a memorable day of healthy competition, learning and sportsmanship for the young chess enthusiasts.
